Rest in peace Mikko Karmila

Shrike

I never had the chance to work with him in the context of music, but I did get to know him through mutual friends and the local blog scene in the early noughties. I remember him as an sarcastic, dry humoured, intelligent conversationalist and having had many a interesting discussion with him, mostly revolving around music. After one of these exchanges I ended up purchasing The Who’s Live at Leeds LP, which he described as “the best live recording ever released”. And I don’t usually really care for live recordings.

Mikko’s discography is pretty impressive as an recording/mixing/mastering engineer and producer, often in combination with the legendary Finnvox Studios in Helsinki/Finland, but he also released and played music with his own bands, especially Moon Cakes springs to mind, plus a fun project with few of our mutual friends in ukulele band Pentelele.
His body of work includes internationally known bands like Nightwish, Amorphis, Children of Bodom, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius and many influential local groups such as Stone, Radiopuhelimet, Kotiteollisuus, Damn The Band, Sub-Urban Tribe, Ismo Alanko, Kolmas Nainen, Itä-Saksa and a near literal ton of others; he has 1051 credits on his Discogs page.
